The University of Iowa Health Care Emergency Department is seeking a dynamic Associate Director of Nursing for our Level I Trauma Center, which include the emergency department and transport. Located in the heart of University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics main hospital, our Emergency Department is 44 rooms with about 60,000 visits and approximately 1200 trauma activations annually.
Reporting to the Director of Nursing for Emergency Medicine, the Associate Director will have approximately 140 FTE between the Emergency Room, the Pediatric Emergency Room, and our emergency transportation system that includes three helicopters at 3 different locations, as well as two ambulances based out of the hospital. The entire emergency transportation system including our AirCare Program is CAMTS accredited; The Commission on Accreditation Transport Systems is dedicated to improving quality and safety of medical transport systems and is the gold standard in the medical transport community as an indicator of the highest quality and safety standards.
Supporting the Associate Director are 2 Nurse Managers and 5 Assistant nurse Managers. Together the team provides leadership and guidance to the 140 FTE of Nurses, Paramedics, Nursing Assistants, and Clinical Technicians.
Quality Care for our patients is the top priority and to ensure ready access to care University of Iowa Health Care also has two Urgent Care Facilities and multiple Quick Care locations in addition to our Emergency Department.
The Department of Emergency Medicine is committed to helping our community partners throughout the state. Our faculty coordinates all emergency department and inpatient transfers and are actively involved with a growing telemedicine program. The eHealth at Iowa initiative brings our consultants and expertise to connected hospitals throughout the state.
Our University of Iowa AirCare emergency transport system cares for the most critically ill and injured patients at community hospitals as well as at scenes. We work with a wide number of health care institutions and public safety services to provide time sensitive and critical care to patients in need.
The department is dedicated to our mission of education. We have a total of 27 emergency medicine physician residents, as well as an active advanced practice provider emergency medicine residency. Our residents develop the skills and abilities to handle any type of emergency situation in a variety of practice models. We also train our residents to manage diverse emergent conditions whether they are encountered in person, as part of an EMS response or through telemedicine.
The department also is heavily involved in the training of EMTs and paramedics, educating nearly half of Iowa’s complement of paramedics through our Emergency Medical Services Learning Resources Center (EMSLRC).
The final leg of our mission is to promote and advance the specialty of emergency medicine through research and outreach. We do this with our emphasis on clinical research, our commitment to CME activities and the Visiting Lecture series as well as expert consultation.

University of Iowa Health Care includes a major tertiary- and quaternary-level health care facility, University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics, UI Health Care Medical Center Downtown in Iowa City, and outpatient clinic facilities across Iowa in population centers such as Waterloo, Des Moines, and Cedar Rapids. In 2025, the system will open a three-story hospital and six-story medical office in the nearby community of North Liberty. The health care system employs nearly 20,000 individuals, including over 1,000 staff physicians and dentists, nearly 800 resident and fellow physicians, and more than 5,000 nursing staff members focused on providing outstanding care and service for patients and their families.
UI Hospitals & Clinics is the state’s only comprehensive academic medical center and serves patients from across the state and the region. It includes the main adult-care hospital, a specialized disabilities and development outpatient facility (serving pediatric and adult patients), and UI Stead Family Children’s Hospital. The 889-inpatient facility (205 pediatric) saw 33,189 admissions and more than 1.2 million clinic visits in FY23.
Joining the system in January of 2024, UI Health Care Medical Center Downtown has 194 beds and offers 24-hour emergency care. Services include Heart and Vascular care, general surgery, orthopedics, wound care, cancer services, and maternity care.
Opening in 2025, UI Health Care North Liberty campus will include a three-story hospital and six-story office building. The new facility will have 36 inpatient beds, 14 emergency care rooms, 12 Operating rooms, and indoor/outdoor physical therapy space.
