Northeast Georgia Health System (NGHS) is a not-for-profit community health system dedicated to our mission of improving the health of our community in all we do. Through the services of a medical staff of more than 1,400 physicians representing more than 60 specialties, our team cares for more than one million people across the region at five hospitals and a variety of outpatient locations.

Founded in 1951 as Hall County Hospital, NGHS has grown to include five Northeast Georgia Medical Center hospital campuses – NGMC Gainesville, NGMC Braselton, NGMC Barrow, NGMC Habersham and NGMC Lumpkin – with a total of more than 950 beds and more than 1,400 medical staff members.

Georgia Heart Institute is Northeast Georgia Medical Center’s (NGMC) comprehensive heart and vascular service line, including inpatient and outpatient hospital services and care provided at more than a dozen physician practice locations across the region.

Our heart care journey began in 1957, when Drs. Sam Poole and Dick Stribling, were recruited to NGMC to launch Heart & Vascular Services at NGMC. From there, things progressed, with the first diagnostic cardiac cath performed in 1984 and the first interventional procedure in 2002. Then, in 2014, The Heart Center of Northeast Georgia officially became a part of the Northeast Georgia Health System (NGHS) family.

Over the last decade, our growth and innovation has continued, with the first cardiac intervention performed in Braselton in 2018. We became the first health system in Georgia with hospitals accredited as Emergency Cardiac Care Centers in 2020, and in 2023 all five were accredited.

In 2021, heart care at NGMC evolved again as Georgia Heart Institute was launched to more accurately reflect the state’s most forward-thinking heart and vascular program and unifying our team of more than 80 cardiologists and advanced practice providers, as well as all inpatient services.

Georgia Heart Institute (GHI) is NGHS employed cardiology group, which spans all subspecialties except transplant and partners with NGPG for cardiovascular surgery and vascular surgery. Built on a foundation of expertise and innovation and backed by a rich history of being Georgia’s #1 heart team for more than a decade, GHI is focused on reimagining the patient experience, coordinating care across all cardiovascular specialties, and bringing clinical breakthroughs to everyday care through participation in international research and leading clinical trials. The institute’s 100+ physicians and advanced practice professionals provide care at 14+ locations spanning these specialties:
