Nurse Manager, Neuropsychiatry Inpatient Unit

The University of Iowa Health Care is seeking a Nurse Manager to lead clinical and managerial operations in the Neuropsychiatry Inpatient Unit. This role oversees both a 15-bed adult unit focused on psychiatric conditions such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, and a specialized 4-bed unit for patients with intellectual disabilities and co-occurring mental health conditions. The Nurse Manager will supervise an interdisciplinary team, drive quality improvement, and ensure compliance with healthcare standards. Ideal candidates should have nursing leadership experience in an academic or unionized setting, proficiency in survey readiness, and a background in neuropsychiatric care.

The Opportunity

The Nurse Manager, supported by two Assistant Nurse Managers, will provide managerial and clinical leadership for the Neuropsychiatry Inpatient Unit (2JPW) and the Neurobehavioral Unit (1JPE). The Nurse Manager will ensure that all staff provide safe clinical care and have the education, methods, and resources to accomplish their performance objectives.

2JPW is a 15-bed adult unit that provides care for patients with general psychiatric conditions, with a particular emphasis on thought disorders such as schizophrenia, bipolar, and other psychotic disorders.

1JPE is a 4-bed adult unit that provides specialized services for adult patients with neurobehavioral conditions, such as an intellectual disability and co-occurring mental illness (IDMI), who display challenging behaviors. The interdisciplinary treatment team includes physicians, psychologists, advanced practice providers, master-level therapists, nurses, social workers, dieticians, occupational and recreational therapists, behavioral health consultants, and a cadre of specialists who collaborate with the treatment team to support the IDMI population.

Positions in this job family usually have limited involvement in direct patient care and focus their efforts on planning, organizing, directing, evaluating, and improving health care operations, clinical education programs, and research programs of clinical and health service departments.

Duties and Responsibilities

Human Resources Management

Hire, develop, and manage the performance of staff in a nursing unit, clinic, or other patient care area. Responsible for talent management of staff and identifying succession planning strategies. Follow and apply leave management policies. Knowledgeable of and implement human resources policies, procedures, and provisions in collective bargaining agreements.

Hiring

  • Makes effective and timely recommendations in matters of hiring, promotion, transfer, and disciplinary actions.
  • Makes appropriate hiring decisions.

Staff Development

  • Manages the talents, strengths, and behaviors of each individual in a diverse workgroup, providing each employee the opportunity to contribute to unit goals.
  • Actively seeks staff participation in decision-making and service improvement activities; provides incentives and rewards for contributions toward service excellence.
  • Demonstrates commitment to people; coaches staff to participate in team decision-making.
  • Develops and implements succession planning.

Performance Management

  • Ensures performance expectations are clearly understood.
  • Holds staff accountable for meeting or exceeding patient needs and expectations, as well as maintaining standards of collaboration and respect within multidisciplinary teams.

Leave Management

  • Reviews attendance data, recognizes trends, and takes appropriate follow-up with staff.

Financial and Data Management & Analysis

Prepare or assist in budget development, provide projections, and make recommendations. Monitor and maintain unit/clinic operating budget within specified targets. Analyze variances and create action plans for corrective action. Understand financial implications of collective bargaining agreements.

  • Monitors unit operating budget, maintaining within HPPD target; analyzes variances and develops corrective action plans if needed.
  • Develops staffing plans, monitors staffing costs, manages inventory levels, tracks supply usage, and implements cost-containment strategies.
  • Forecasts expenses and capital needs; participates in capital budget development and plans for equipment replacement.
  • Assists in unit operating budget development, staffing plans, minor equipment replacement, service contracts, and new supply costs.
  • Encourages creativity in staff scheduling and flexibility.
  • Ensures fiscal goals are understood by staff and objectives are met.
  • Motivates staff toward high performance through strong stewardship of university resources.

Operations, Standards of Care, Regulatory Compliance, Quality & Patient Satisfaction

Provide leadership to establish and maintain efficient and effective systems that ensure optimal patient outcomes. Identify trends, determine quality initiatives, and allocate resources to meet quality and productivity expectations. Review patient experience data and implement plans to enhance patient experience. Ensure the unit is survey ready.

  • Provides managerial and clinical leadership for 24-hour patient care to ensure optimal outcomes.

Qualifications and Requirements

Education

  • Bachelor’s or Master’s in Nursing required. A Master’s degree (Nursing, MBA, or Healthcare-related) or Doctorate (DNP, PhD) is preferred. Candidates without a Master’s degree will be strongly encouraged to obtain one within five years of starting the position.

Experience

  • 3+ years of nursing leadership and management experience – required.
  • Demonstrated skill in leadership/management and clinical practice – required.

Licenses/Certification​

  • Current license to practice nursing in Iowa required by the date of hire.
  • Certification in a role or specialty through a nationally recognized professional nursing certification body. If not currently certified, must seek certification as soon as eligible to sit for the exam.

Special Skills​

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills – required.
  • Proficiency in computer software applications – required.

The Ideal Candidate

We are seeking a Nurse Manager with experience in an academic medical center, preferably working with union staff. This role involves assisting with state and Joint Commission surveys, making previous experience in these areas essential. The successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to stabilize the unit workforce and bring creative and consistent problem-solving skills to the department. Given the many moving pieces and upcoming enhancements within the department, we need a leader who can collaborate effectively, stay focused on the mission, and prioritize the well-being of both patients and the organization.
